Abstract
More tales from the front lines of supporting users of federated services!
It is a dark time for the Federation. Although a Community Server has been destroyed and rebuilt, users have migrated to servers across the network. Evading the dreaded Proprietary Software, a group of freedom fighters has established a new base on the remote hosting platform of Snikket.
Powerful adversaries seek to grab and keep control over our digital lives. Walled gardens abound! What can we do to take back ownership of how we communicate with each other?...
This talk will focus on a case study of surviving an upgrade-gone-wrong of a large public server, and the efforts to help hundreds of users regain access to services and their communication freedom. We'll discuss common terms related to XMPP and the Jabber network, look at some of the pitfalls inherent in depending on the kindness of strangers, and talk about what's being done to build a brighter tomorrow.
Come learn more about open federated systems and how you can help others join the fight!
