Abstract
On May 25, the Vatican released "Magnifica Humanitas"; Pope Leo XIV's long anticipated encyclical on “preserving the human person in the age of artificial intelligence”. While primarily focused on artificial intelligence, the encyclical is a wide ranging document on human dignity in the digital world using arguments that have overlap with the arguments of the FOSS and digital autonomy movements.
Using the lens of a secular, digital autonomy activist, Eric Schultz walks through the core philosophical arguments of “Magnifica Humanitas”, shares the parallels with our very own movement’s philosophical principles and considers whether “Magnifica Humanitas” helps move us closer to a world where FOSS and digital autonomy are the norm.
